Durham's North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, founded in 1898, survived the Depression and remained the nation's largest Black-owned business, employing thousands and anchoring a remarkable ecosystem of Black-owned banks, stores, and real estate in what Booker T. Washington had called 'the capital of the Black middle class.'
