Orson Welles Directs All-Black 'Voodoo Macbeth' in Harlem
Under Federal Theatre Project auspices, twenty-year-old Orson Welles directed a landmark all-Black production of Macbeth set in Haiti at the Lafayette Theatre in Harlem, with Canada Lee and Jack Carter in the leads. The production was a sensation and a milestone in both Black theater history and American theatrical innovation.
