Richard Wright Publishes Uncle Tom's Children

Wright's debut short story collection, winner of the Story Magazine prize for WPA writers, depicted the brutal violence of Jim Crow Mississippi with unflinching realism and won him national recognition. It established his voice and prepared the ground for Native Son two years later.
