Charles Drew resigns from Red Cross over segregated blood policy

Charles Drew, who had pioneered blood banking and directed the first large-scale blood bank programs for the British and American military, resigned from directing the American Red Cross blood program in 1942 in protest of its policy of segregating blood plasma by race — a policy with no scientific basis. Drew publicly condemned the policy and continued his research and medical education at Howard University.
