Gordon Parks joins FSA, creates 'American Gothic, Washington D.C.'
Gordon Parks arrived in Washington D.C. in January 1942 as the first Black photographer on the Farm Security Administration staff. He created over 90 photographs of charwoman Ella Watson, including his iconic 'American Gothic, Washington D.C.' (1942), a pointed response to racial inequality staged before a U.S. flag, establishing Parks as a major documentary photographer.
