First Black Marines arrive at Montford Point
On August 26, 1942, the first African American troops arrived at Montford Point, a segregated training facility at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, following FDR's June 1941 executive order opening Marine Corps enlistment to Black men. Over 19,000 Black Marines would train there by war's end, serving in combat and support roles across the Pacific.
