John H. Johnson founds Negro Digest

John H. Johnson launched Negro Digest in November 1942 with a $500 loan against his mother's furniture and $6,000 in charter subscriptions. Modeled on Reader's Digest but focused on African American life, it sold 3,000 copies in its first issue and grew to 50,000 monthly circulation within a year, laying the foundation for the Johnson Publishing empire.
