Hattie McDaniel stars in Beulah radio show

Hattie McDaniel, who had won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1940 (the first Black Oscar winner), took the title role in the CBS radio comedy Beulah beginning in 1947, becoming one of the first Black performers to star in a nationally broadcast radio series. While the character's maid role reflected the limited roles available to Black actors, McDaniel used her platform to advocate for better representation.
