Billie Holiday wins Esquire Gold Award, first jazz critics' poll
In 1944 Billie Holiday received Esquire magazine's Gold Award for best female vocalist, her first major critics' poll victory. During the war years her torch singing resonated deeply with audiences experiencing wartime separation; she continued recording for Decca while her 1939 Commodore recording of 'Strange Fruit' remained a landmark protest against lynching.
