Lt. John R. Fox calls artillery on own position at Sommocolonia

On December 26, 1944, First Lieutenant John R. Fox of the 92nd Infantry Division (Buffalo Soldiers) in Sommocolonia, Italy, voluntarily remained at his forward observer post as German forces overran his position. He called artillery fire on his own location, telling his commander 'that was just where I wanted it.' Approximately 100 German soldiers were found dead around the site. Fox was denied the Medal of Honor for 53 years due to racial bias; President Clinton awarded it posthumously in 1997.
