Nat King Cole enters pop mainstream — crossover artist of the decade

By 1944 Nat King Cole had become one of the first Black artists to achieve consistent mainstream pop chart success, with the King Cole Trio crossing racial boundaries through a combination of jazz sophistication, accessible vocals, and Capitol Records promotion. His pop success challenged the assumption that Black artists could succeed only within segregated 'race records' markets.
