Sarah Vaughan joins Billy Eckstine Orchestra

After winning an Amateur Night contest at the Apollo Theater in 1942 and a stint with Earl Hines in 1943, Sarah Vaughan joined Billy Eckstine's newly formed bebop big band in early 1944. Immersed in bebop's harmonic complexity, she developed the extraordinary range and sophisticated pitch manipulation that would make her one of the greatest vocalists of the twentieth century.
