Elizabeth Catlett creates the Negro Woman sculpture and print series
Elizabeth Catlett began her landmark 'Negro Woman' series of sculptures and linocut prints in 1946-1947, developed during her time teaching at the George Washington Carver School in Harlem (1944-46). Her 1940 limestone 'Negro Mother and Child' had already won first place at the Chicago American Negro Exposition. The series celebrated Black women's labor, dignity, and historical resistance through figures including Harriet Tubman.
