Gwendolyn Brooks publishes A Street in Bronzeville

Gwendolyn Brooks published her debut poetry collection A Street in Bronzeville in 1945 at age 28, dedicated to the working-class Black community of Chicago's South Side. Richard Wright, who helped secure its Harper & Brothers publication, praised her ability to render 'the pathos of petty destinies.' The collection established Brooks as a major American poet and began her path to the Pulitzer Prize.
