Richard Wright publishes Black Boy

Richard Wright published Black Boy in 1945, his autobiographical account of growing up Black in the Jim Crow South. It became a best-seller and Book of the Month Club selection, reaching a national audience with searing firsthand testimony of racial violence, poverty, and psychological damage inflicted by American apartheid. It remains one of the definitive works of twentieth-century autobiography.
