Vernon Baker single-handedly destroys German positions at Castle Aghinolfi

On April 5, 1945, First Lieutenant Vernon Baker of the 92nd Infantry Division (Buffalo Soldiers) single-handedly eliminated three machine-gun nests, an observation post, and a dugout at Castle Aghinolfi, Italy, enabling his unit to advance through fortified German lines. Though awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in July 1945, he was denied the Medal of Honor due to racial bias and waited 52 years; President Clinton awarded it in 1997.
