Willard Motley completes Knock on Any Door
Willard Motley published Knock on Any Door in 1947, a bestselling crime novel following a young man's descent into criminality through poverty and institutional failure. Unlike most Black authors of the era, Motley wrote about multi-ethnic urban poverty rather than exclusively Black experience, yet his work emerged from the Chicago Black literary tradition. The novel sold over 400,000 copies and was adapted into a 1949 Humphrey Bogart film.
