John H. Johnson launches Ebony magazine

John H. Johnson launched Ebony magazine in November 1945, modeled on Life magazine but devoted to celebrating Black achievement and culture. Within months it reached 400,000 circulation, becoming the most-read Black publication in America. Ebony gave Black readers affirmative images of themselves and created an advertising market that proved to corporations the scale and wealth of the Black consumer base.
