Willard Motley publishes Knock on Any Door
Willard Motley published Knock on Any Door in 1947, a bestselling crime novel following a young man's descent into criminality through poverty and institutional failure. The novel sold over 400,000 copies, was adapted into a 1949 Humphrey Bogart film, and emerged from the Chicago Black literary tradition while addressing multi-ethnic urban poverty.
