Percy Julian Develops Affordable Cortisone Synthesis

Percy Julian, a Black chemist who had synthesized physostigmine from the calabar bean, developed a commercially viable method for synthesizing cortisone, dramatically reducing the price of the drug used to treat arthritis. His work at the Glidden Company made him one of the most commercially successful chemists in America.
