WERD Atlanta Grows as Nation's First Black-Owned Radio Station

WERD in Atlanta, purchased in 1949 by Jesse B. Blayton Sr. as the first Black-owned radio station in America, grew its audience and influence in the early 1950s, broadcasting programming targeted to Atlanta's Black community. The station pioneered formats and business models that dozens of Black-owned stations would later follow.
