Nat King Cole Hosts His Own Network Television Show

Nat King Cole became the first Black American to host his own nationally broadcast television variety show on NBC. Though the show was critically well received, Cole could not attract national sponsors unwilling to risk alienating Southern affiliates, and the show was cancelled after one season. Cole famously said: 'Madison Avenue is afraid of the dark.'
