Civil Rights Act of 1957 Signed into Law

The Civil Rights Act of 1957, championed by Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson, became the first civil rights legislation passed by Congress since Reconstruction. It established the Civil Rights Division within the Justice Department and a Civil Rights Commission, though its enforcement provisions were weak.
