Romare Bearden and Artists Form the Spiral Group

Romare Bearden convened 14 Black artists — including Norman Lewis, Charles Alston, and Hale Woodruff — in New York to discuss art's relationship to the civil rights movement. The resulting Spiral group became a foundational moment for organized Black visual art.
