Muhammad Ali Refuses Draft Induction, Stripped of Heavyweight Title

Ali refused Army induction on religious grounds. Within hours he was stripped of his boxing license and heavyweight title by every state athletic commission. He faced five years in prison and was not cleared by the Supreme Court until 1971, spending his prime boxing years in exile.
