Nina Simone Performs 'Mississippi Goddam' at Carnegie Hall

Written in fury after the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing and the murder of Medgar Evers, 'Mississippi Goddam' was Simone's first explicitly civil rights song. Its sarcastic 'show tune' framing gave way to devastating protest lyrics that got the record banned across Southern radio.
