NAACP Reaches 450,000 Members at Civil Rights Movement Peak

The NAACP reached peak membership of 450,000 in 1964, its greatest strength since the 1920s. Under Roy Wilkins's executive leadership the organization coordinated the legislative strategy that produced both the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
