Gwendolyn Brooks Publishes 'In the Mecca' and Joins Black Arts Movement

Brooks's long poem set in Chicago's Mecca Flats housing project was her last book for Harper & Row before she moved to Broadside Press to support Black-owned publishing. Her public turn toward the Black Arts Movement was a major signal of the movement's cultural legitimacy.
