Essence magazine launches as first major Black women's publication

Essence magazine launches its first issue in May 1970, founded by Edward Lewis, Clarence Smith, Jonathan Blount, and Cecil Hollingsworth. It becomes the dominant lifestyle and culture magazine for Black American women.
