Harold Washington Builds Multiracial Coalition for Chicago Mayoralty

Harold Washington wins the Democratic primary for Chicago mayor by building an unprecedented coalition of Black voters, Latinos, and white liberals, defeating incumbent Jane Byrne and Richard M. Daley in a historic campaign. He goes on to win the general election and become the city's first Black mayor.
