Adam Clayton Powell Jr. elected to Congress

Adam Clayton Powell Jr. of Harlem was sworn in as a US Representative, becoming one of the most prominent and outspoken Black legislators in American history. As chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee in the 1960s, he was central to passing landmark Great Society legislation.
