Alexander Twilight Elected to Vermont Legislature

Alexander Twilight was elected to the Vermont General Assembly, becoming the first Black American elected to a state legislature in United States history. Twilight served as principal of the Orleans County Grammar School and was a respected community leader in Brownington, Vermont. His election was a solitary but historic milestone in Black political participation, occurring more than three decades before the 15th Amendment would guarantee Black men the right to vote.
