Althea Gibson Wins Wimbledon — First Black Grand Slam Champion

Althea Gibson won the Wimbledon singles title on July 6, 1957, becoming the first Black person of either gender to win a Grand Slam tennis championship. She was received by Queen Elizabeth II and later won the US National Championships that same year. Her back-to-back Wimbledon titles in 1957 and 1958 established her as the dominant player in world tennis.
