Arthur Ashe becomes first Black man to win Wimbledon

Arthur Ashe defeated Jimmy Connors to win the Wimbledon championship, becoming the first and, for decades, the only Black man to win the tournament. Ashe had previously won the U.S. Open in 1968 as the first Black man to do so; his career combined athletic excellence with outspoken civil rights advocacy.
