Barbara Jordan delivers landmark Watergate impeachment speech
Texas congresswoman Barbara Jordan delivered a nationally televised speech before the House Judiciary Committee during the Nixon impeachment hearings that was so powerful and constitutionally precise it catapulted her to national fame. Jordan, the first Southern Black woman elected to Congress, demonstrated that Black women could command the highest stages of American political life and became one of the most admired figures in the country.
