Benjamin Banneker publishes his first almanac

Self-taught mathematician and astronomer Benjamin Banneker published his first almanac containing his astronomical calculations and ephemeris, distributed widely throughout the Mid-Atlantic states. He also assisted in the survey of the District of Columbia and famously corresponded with Thomas Jefferson challenging the hypocrisy of slavery in a republic that claimed all men equal.
