Benjamin Banneker Challenges Jefferson on Slavery

Benjamin Banneker sent a now-famous letter to Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson challenging the hypocrisy of a slaveholder writing about human liberty, enclosing a manuscript copy of his almanac as proof of Black intellectual capability.
