Robert Johnson founds BET — the first Black-owned cable network

Robert L. Johnson launched Black Entertainment Television on January 25, 1980, with a $15,000 investment, making it the first Black-owned cable channel in America. BET grew into a cultural institution reaching tens of millions of households; when Johnson sold it to Viacom in 2001 for $3 billion, he became the first Black American billionaire.
