Henry McNeal Turner Consecrated AME Bishop — Pioneering Pan-Africanist
Henry McNeal Turner was consecrated a bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1880 after serving as the first Black U.S. Army chaplain during the Civil War and as a Georgia state legislator during Reconstruction. As bishop he expanded the AME Church into Africa, making him the leading Black religious institution-builder of the late 19th century.
