Black Mutual Aid Societies Proliferate Across Northern Cities

The early 1800s saw a proliferation of Black mutual aid societies in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and Newport providing financial assistance, burial benefits, and community support to free Black families. Organizations such as the African Society of Philadelphia and the African Benevolent Society of Newport formalized community self-reliance. These societies were among the earliest examples of Black-organized civil society institutions in the United States.
