Black Press Expands Rapidly During Reconstruction

The number of Black newspapers grew from approximately 10 in 1865 to over 30 by 1875, including the New Orleans Tribune (1864), the first daily Black newspaper; the Christian Recorder (AME, Philadelphia); and the New National Era (Washington DC), edited by Frederick Douglass from 1870 to 1874. These papers reported Klan violence, advocated for civil rights, and built national Black political consciousness.
