Stokely Carmichael issues the call for Black Power
During the Meredith March Against Fear in Mississippi in 1966, SNCC chairman Stokely Carmichael delivered a speech calling for 'Black Power,' launching a new phase of the civil rights movement that emphasized Black self-determination, pride, and political control rather than integration. The phrase transformed American politics and culture and set the framework for Black political organizing for decades.
