600 Black Soldiers Help Defeat British at Battle of New Orleans
Andrew Jackson commanded over 600 Black soldiers in two battalions of free men of color at the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815 — the final major engagement of the War of 1812. Jackson praised their 'great bravery' in dispatches. Their conspicuous service strengthened arguments for Black citizenship rights in the following decades.
