Booker T. Washington founds Tuskegee Institute

Booker T. Washington opened the Tuskegee Normal School in Alabama in 1881, building it from a single shanty into one of the most influential Black educational institutions in American history. His philosophy of industrial education and self-reliance shaped Black advancement strategy for decades and made him the most prominent Black leader of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
