Booker T. Washington dines at the White House

Booker T. Washington became the first Black American to be invited to dine at the White House when President Theodore Roosevelt hosted him for dinner. The event caused a national furor, particularly in the South, but marked a symbolic acknowledgment of Black leadership at the highest levels of American civic life.
