Buffalo Soldiers: 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments Established
Congress authorized the formation of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments, the first Black peacetime regular Army units, as part of the Army Reorganization Act of 1866. These soldiers, nicknamed Buffalo Soldiers by Plains Indian tribes, compiled one of the best disciplinary records in the Army and played a significant role in post-Civil War frontier service.
