Cathy Hughes founds Radio One, building the largest Black radio empire
Cathy Hughes acquired WOL-AM in Washington D.C. in 1980 and founded Radio One, eventually building it into the largest Black-owned radio broadcasting company in America with over 50 stations. Hughes became the first Black woman to chair a publicly traded company when Radio One listed on NASDAQ in 1999, and later expanded into television with TV One.
