Charles Chesnutt publishes The Conjure Woman

Chesnutt's collection of conjure tales, published by Houghton Mifflin, made him the first Black fiction writer to be published by a major American house and to reach a primarily white readership. His work established the short story as a vehicle for Black social critique and anticipated the Harlem Renaissance by twenty years.
