Charlie Sifford Competes in PGA-Sanctioned Tournament

Charlie Sifford broke the color barrier in professional golf during the early 1950s, competing in PGA-sanctioned open tournaments despite the PGA Tour's explicit 'Caucasian-only' clause. He endured death threats and extreme hostility at tournaments throughout the South and border states. Sifford's persistence eventually led to him winning the Greater Hartford Open in 1967, the first Black golfer to win a PGA Tour event, and he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2004.
