Cleveland Gazette Founded — Major Black Press Voice

Harry C. Smith founded the Cleveland Gazette in 1883, establishing one of the Midwest's most important Black newspapers. Smith used its platform to campaign against racial discrimination in public accommodations, lobbied for Ohio's civil rights law, and was elected to the Ohio state legislature — a model of press-driven civic achievement.
